Coaches Corner

Dear LGRC Rowers and Parents,

The fall season is just a few weeks away and we are eager to get the year started.  We have been working to put together a team of coaches that will continue to raise the level of our junior programs.  We have made some changes and added some new coaches to our staff this year and look to build a strong, fast and fun boathouse that will see success in all of our boats, from top to bottom.

While many of the names on our coaches roster are familiar ones, 3 names are new to our staff, Evan Bainbridge, Kasey Heil and Katherine Cobarrubia.   Please help me welcome them.

Evan Bainbridge comes to LGRC from Newport Aquatic Center where he served as the Assistant Varsity Men’s Coach that led the Lightweight 8+ to a National Championship in 2009, and Lead Novice Boys Coach in 2010.  As a junior, Evan rowed at LGRC and then went on to row at OCC before finishing his degree at Chapman.

Kasey Heil, also a LGRC alum, recently graduated from Washington State University with a degree in Kinesiology.  While at Washington State, Kasey rowed and coxed for the varsity womens program.  In the past few years Kasey has coached at LGRC as a part of the Summer Junior Development Camp and the Masters Program.

Katherine Cobarrubia coxed for Capital Crew in Sacramento as a junior and for UC Davis in college.  Currently she is a teacher at Presentation High School and will assist with both our Master and Junior Programs.

We look forward to another year of hard work and fast boats.

Thanks,

Jaime Velez

Gold for the US Jr. Men's 8 at World Junior Championships

Congratulations to Los Gatos Rowing Club junior rower Zach Hershberger and the entire US Junior Men's 8 crew on winning GOLD in an exciting final on Sunday, August 8 at the 2010 World Rowing Junior Championships in Racice, Czech Republic.  It was a great race, with Germany (2 seconds behind at the 1500m mark) pushing hard in the last 500m in an attempt to cross the finish line ahead of the US.  The US held strong and finished .67 seconds ahead of the Germans!  Click here to see the US Rowing press release.
