Week 2, Junior Learn To Row Summer Camp 2018

TargetAudience

Beginner rowers, male and female, age 11-18 (entering 6th-12th grade). No prior experience necessary.

Program Description

Our week-long camps are designed to introduce middle school and high school boys and girls to the sport of rowing. Each camp will run from 8:30AM - 11:30AM Monday throughThursday, and 8:30AM- 12:30PM on Friday. The camp will focus on learning to row in eight-oared shells (boats), team building, and different methods of training: running, erging (rowing machine), and water rowing.

Each day athletes will participate in two water practices. By the end of the week each athlete will be able to accomplish the following:

  1. Recognize a boat and all necessary parts (seat, rigger, oarlock, oar, foot stretchers); understand the rowing stroke.
  2. Differentiate between rowing Port and Starboard
  3. Recognize the value of a coxswain
  4. Lift, transport, and row in an eight-oared shell

Participants are expected to be energetic and bring a positive attitude. Athletes will be interacting with a variety of other athletes, coaches, and staff and should be intent on learning and having a great time!

For 8th graders or high school athletes looking for something new, this coed camp is a great way to find out if rowing might be a good fit. Participants attending for a second week will be introduced to sculling (boat with single rower, two oars) and returning athletes may be grouped together in an 8-oared shell to refine technique, etc.

There will be one coach and one experienced high school rower for every 15 participants. Minimum participants: 12, maximum: 40.

On Friday, parents are invited to come at 11AM and watch the final inter-camp regatta. Afterwards, parents and athletes will enjoy lunch with their coaches and other rowers. At that time, LGRC staff will be available to answer any questions about the club, the sport, and/or getting involved in our high school rowing programs.

Cost:

The cost is $300 per week. Athletes are encouraged to sign up for multiple weeks. Camp fee includes an LGRC Learn To Row T-shirt, and an awards and pizza lunch on the last day of each session (parents are invited).

All participants must bring a hard copy of a completed 2018 US Rowing Waiver AND Swim Waiver to their first day of camp.
